Secretary of State Gigi Dennis on Wednesday ordered clerks and recorders in 10 counties to manually count the ballots from this month's election.
The counties that must undergo the manual count are Bent, Chaffee, Clear Creek, Custer, Elbert, Fremont, Huerfano, Park, Pueblo and Sedgwick, the secretary of state's office said.
Dennis said the decision to require the recounts came after a post-election audit found inconsistent results with the Optech III-P Eagle vote-counting system used by the 10 counties.
The secretary of state's office did not say how many, if any, races could be affected by the hand recount. The audit that triggered the move is required by law.
"The post-election audit was adopted into Colorado law to address these types of concerns," Dennis said in a statement. "No election results have been certified by my office, and I will not put my stamp of approval on any results until I am confident that the vote is accurate."
Dennis said most of the counties that will be involved in the manual recount did not have any problems with their post-election audit.
"I am requiring this1 to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the election," Dennis said.
